THE THREEPENNY OPERA

Performance dates are February 27-March 1

Threepenny is a gritty, dark comic musical play by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill that rips into the corruption of both the criminal underworld and respectable society. Set in the seedy underbelly of Victorian London, it follows the charismatic gangster Macheath ("Mack the Knife") as he navigates betrayal, marriage, and the long arm of the law. As Macheath tries to stay one step ahead of the police—and his many enemies—the line between crooks and the so-called civilized elite blurs. With biting satire and unforgettable songs, this revolutionary post-WWI work redefined what musical theater could be. This new English adaptation will be presented in a cabaret style with reduced orchestration.

Casting for the following in Threepenny:

Macheath (London’s most notorious criminal): tenor/baritone

Jonathan Peachum (controller of all the beggars in London): baritone

Celia Peachum (Jonathan’s “partner in crime”): mezzo-soprano

Polly Peachum (their daughter, and Mack’s new bride): soprano

Tiger Brown (Chief of Police and Mack’s best friend): baritone

Lucy Brown (Brown’s daughter. She believes she’s married to Mack): soprano

Jenny Driver: a “lady of the night” and formerly linked romantically to Mack: soprano or mezzo-soprano

Street Singer (Sings “Ballad of Mack the Knife” in the opening scene): tenor/baritone

Walter, Matthias, Jakob, Jimmie, Ede (members of Mack’s gang): all voice types/genders
